IBV Valve Mechanism

During the minimally invasive procedure, a catheter is passed through the channel of a standard flexible bronchoscope to deploy the small umbrella-shaped valves into the airways of the lungs.

The flexible Nitinol struts of the valve hold the polymer membrane against the airway mucosa to seal the airway, whilst still allowing expansion and contraction with airway movement during breathing.

Airflow is limited to the portions of the lung distal to the valve, while still allowing mucous and air movement in the proximal direction.

The valves can be implanted permanently (for example, for emphysema), but are designed to be removed if necessary or clinically indicated (for example, after resolution of air leaks).

The IBV Valve System is available to trained centres only.  For more information, please contact Olympus KeyMed.
